ABOUT

MISSION
The Inclusive Sports Day initiative aims to unite students of all abilities through shared athletic activities, breaking down barriers between special-needs and non-disabled peers. As a trained Special Olympics youth coach, the student organizer’s mission is to foster genuine friendships and understanding on campus by creating mixed teams of students with and without intellectual disabilities. This event will celebrate inclusivity and teamwork, laying the groundwork for a more compassionate school culture where everyone can participate and feel valued.
What We Are
Building

Inclusive Sports Day will be an all-campus field day featuring unified teams in activities like relay races, basketball shoot-outs, and soccer scrimmages. Each team will include students with special needs paired with general education partners, coached by student volunteers (including the organizer). The event is being developed in collaboration with our local Special Olympics chapter, following the Unified Sports model. The format emphasizes cooperation over competition – for example, a relay team might consist of alternating athletes with and without disabilities, encouraging teammates to support one another. Through mixed-team games, carnival booths run by the Life Skills class, and a celebratory awards ceremony, the day’s vision is to make inclusion fun and visible. The student organizer has already secured tentative support from Special Olympics for equipment and training guidelines, and has a clear plan to ensure safety, accessibility, and high energy throughout the day.
